Book Review: “Five Broken Blades” by Mai Corland
Five Broken Blades is the story of five people who are not heroes — they are traitors, killers, and liars, each with their own reason to raise a blade against…
Mai Corland is a Korean-American writer, best known for her fantasy novel Five Broken Blades. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, and adopted as a child by an American family in New York.
She graduated from Rollins College and then obtained a law degree from the University of Miami School of Law. Before fully committing to writing, Corland worked as an attorney, later combining her two passions.
Mai Corland lives in the United States with her partner, two children, and a goldfish that, she humorously notes, will likely outlive them all.
In addition to writing under her own name, she publishes books for teens and young readers under the pseudonym Meredith Ireland. In both author identities, she explores themes of identity, belonging, and the power of difference.
Her debut as Mai Corland, Five Broken Blades (2024), catapulted her among the most-discussed new names in fantasy. The novel made the New York Times bestseller list and was featured in various “Best of Year” lists. The sequel, Four Ruined Realms, was released in early 2025, and the third book, Three Shattered Souls, was published in July 2025.
