“Six Crimson Cranes” is the first book in the series of the same name by author Elizabeth Lim. The books follow the story of Princess Shiori’anma of Kiata, who is the youngest sister of six brothers. As they approach their last summer together before they become adults, Shiori’anma reveals a deeply guarded secret. She possesses forbidden powers that would banish her from the kingdom forever. But when she discovers an even greater secret that she is convinced she must reveal to her brothers, she is confronted by her stepmother, the empress consort Raikama.

Raikama banishes the princess and transforms her brothers into six cranes. With a bowl on her head that she cannot remove and the warning that every word she speaks means a death sentence for her brothers, Shiori’anma must fight against the desert, magic, dragons and war before she can break the terrible curse.

Elizabeth Lim’s series combines the stories of Hans Christian Andersen’s Wild Swans, Charles Perrault’s Donkey Skin and Hachikazuki. Elements that she incorporates into the plot in an original and unobtrusive way.
