SenLinYu is an American writer who uses they/them pronouns. They became widely recognized in literary circles as the author of Manacled, considered one of the most significant Harry Potter fanfictions ever written.

SenLinYu – Author

SenLinYu grew up in the Pacific Northwest in a large family with six brothers. Their parents are an evangelical pastor and a former ballerina. They studied classical liberal arts and culture, a background that would later shape their storytelling voice.

SenLinYu’s first steps as a writer began in the world of fanfiction. They chose the Harry Potter universe as inspiration—particularly the dynamic pairing of Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger (known in the fandom as “Dramione”). Between 2018 and 2019, they published the dark dystopian fanfic Manacled on platforms such as Archive of Our Own, where it quickly gained millions of readers and built a devoted global fanbase.

Manacled and Its Impact

Manacled presents an alternate universe in which Voldemort wins the war, and Hermione is captured and forced into a brutal breeding program. At its core is the complex, conflicted relationship between her and Draco Malfoy. The story became a cult classic within the Dramione community and stands as a testament to the power of fanfiction to create entirely new literary worlds for readers.

From Fanfiction to Published Novel – Alchemised

In 2025, SenLinYu completed the transformation of Manacled into an original work titled Alchemised. The novel, released on September 23 by Del Rey in the US and by Ciela in Bulgaria, reimagines the story with necromancy and alchemy instead of Rowling’s wizarding magic. The book is entirely independent of the Harry Potter universe. Film rights for Alchemised were acquired by Legendary Entertainment, paving the way for a major screen adaptation.

SenLinYu currently lives in Portland, Oregon. In interviews and personal essays, they have shared that writing Manacled was not only a creative endeavor but also a therapeutic process, helping them navigate personal challenges as well as the expectations of their large and passionate readership.
