Tress of the Emerald Sea is a standalone novel from Brandon Sanderson, part of his Secret Projects collection, which he wrote during the pandemic. This is the first of four books (so far) and, unlike most of his other Cosmere stories, has a distinctly different tone.

Plot
The story takes place on the planet Lumar, where the seas are composed of spores that fall from the planet’s orbiting moons. These include the Emerald Sea, the Crimson Sea, the Zephyr Sea, and the Midnight Sea—each named after its distinct color. These spores react violently and in different ways upon contact with water, making them extremely dangerous.
The story is narrated by Hoid, a recurring character in Sanderson’s Cosmere books. The plot follows Tress and Charlie, whose love is threatened first by social class differences and then by the evil Sorceress. Determined to save Charlie, Tress embarks on a perilous journey across the spore-filled seas. Disguising herself as a sailor, she joins the crew of a ship—only to discover it is a pirate vessel captained by a ruthless leader.
Review
Tress of the Emerald Sea has the feel of a classic fairy tale, reminiscent of the stories we read as children. It has all the essential elements: a brave heroine, an evil sorceress, a curse, and a world brimming with magic. Tress’s unwavering love for Charlie and her unyielding determination to rescue him are at the heart of the narrative. As she faces countless dangers and uncovers hidden truths, she grows into a more confident and resourceful version of herself.
Hoid’s narration adds a unique charm to the book, blending humor, wit, and playful storytelling. His informal style and engaging asides make it feel as if he’s speaking directly to the reader. The lighthearted tone sets Tress of the Emerald Sea apart from Sanderson’s more epic and intense works, yet the story still features his signature world-building and unexpected twists—including some surprisingly dark moments.
Magic System
Brandon Sanderson’s imagination never ceases to amaze me. In Tress of the Emerald Sea, we encounter yet another unique magic system. While not as deeply explored as in some of his other books, the concept is fascinating. Imagine sailing across a sea of spores, where a single drop of water, sweat, or any bodily fluid could instantly spell doom.
Final Thoughts
Tress of the Emerald Sea is a whimsical and captivating fantasy novel that showcases a different side of Brandon Sanderson’s storytelling. The enchanting world, Hoid’s delightful narration, and the distinctive magic system make it a personal favorite. If you’re looking for a story about love, courage, and the extraordinary strength of ordinary people—or if you simply want an introduction to Sanderson’s works—this book is an excellent choice.
