The Canadian author Ian C. Esselmont was born in 1962. He studied and worked as an archeologist. He graduated in creative writing and in 1982, together with his colleague, the archeologist and writer Steven Erikson, developed a role-playing background for the world of Malazan.
Esselmont and Erikson wrote a movie script with a plot set in the world of Malazan. Unable to realize it, Erikson revised it and published the first book in the Gardens of the Moon series. The two agreed to write novels set in the same world, but Eslemont started much later than his colleague.
His first novel, Night of Knives, from the Novels of the Malazan Empire series, was published in 2004. It is a kind of foretaste of the series, the main development of which began with his second novel, Return of the Crimson Guard, in 2008.
