Prime Video Cancels The Wheel of Time After Season 3 Despite Creative Praise
The TV adaptation of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s The Wheel of Time, co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, was a major fantasy drama that helped launch the genre on Prime Video—later joined by The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
However, Prime Video has decided not to move forward with a fourth season.
The decision, made more than a month after the release of the Season 3 finale on April 17, came after extensive internal discussions. While the series was well-regarded creatively by Amazon executives, financial factors ultimately led to its cancellation—a common outcome in today’s cost-conscious entertainment climate.
Although The Wheel of Time performed well internationally, topping Prime Video rankings in several countries, its overall Season 3 viewership did not justify the high production costs. After exploring various options and holding talks with lead studio Sony TV, the platform concluded that continuing the series wasn’t feasible.
Aware of the uncertain future and the show’s devoted fanbase, the creators crafted the Season 3 finale to provide a sense of closure.
Even so, the cancellation will come as a heavy blow to fans, many of whom considered the third season the show’s strongest yet in terms of storytelling and execution.
