Book Review: Golden Son by Pierce Brown
"Golden Son" can only be described as a runaway train that obliterates everything in its path. Without hesitation — the second book in the Red Rising series surpasses even the…
Pierce Brown was born on January 28, 1988 in Denver, Colorado, USA, and grew up in a family that included a banker and an executive at Fisher Communications. He spent his childhood moving around seven different states. In 2010, he graduated from Pepperdine College with a degree in Political Science and Economics.
After graduating, he worked in various positions while trying to write novels on the side. After six rejected manuscripts, Pierce wrote his first published novel in just two months in his parents’ garage.
In 2014, his debut novel Red Rising was published as part of the dystopian series of the same name. It is set in a distant future where the entire solar system has been colonized and humanity is ruled by a totalitarian caste system. The protagonist, Darrow, belongs to the lowest caste, the Reds, who are forced to work in the mines of Mars. Darrow joins a rebel group called the Sons of Ares and infiltrates the institute where the children of the elite caste, the Golds, are trained. Disguised as one of them, he fights for change from within.
The book became a bestseller, and the two subsequent parts reached the top of the charts. in 2014, Pierce Brown was awarded Best Debut Author by Goodreads and in 2015 he received another award for Best Science Fiction Novel. The series has been considered for a film adaptation, with Brown himself collaborating on the screenplay.
