Hulu Cancels “A Court of Thorns and Roses”

Disney Scraps A Court of Thorns and Roses Adaptation

Disney has officially pulled the plug on its planned adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. The series was set to be Hulu’s first original fantasy production, but the project is no longer moving forward.

What Is A Court of Thorns and Roses About?

A Court of Thorns and Roses, the first book in a five-part series of the same name, follows the story of a young huntress named Feyre, who kills a faerie. As punishment, she is forced to live in the fae realm. At first, she despises her new life, but over time, she begins to embrace it—especially after falling for a High Fae lord named Tamlin.

According to The A.V. Club, Sarah J. Maas’ series has sold over 20 million copies, making it a massive hit. So, it wasn’t surprising when Disney announced a few years ago that it was working on a TV adaptation for Hulu.

Why Was the Series Canceled?

The project was being developed by Sarah J. Maas herself, alongside Ronald D. Moore—the creator behind the 2000s reboot of Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. It seemed like a dream team, but according to Deadline, Moore eventually left the project. Rather than finding a replacement, Disney decided to shut it down entirely.

What Does This Mean for Hulu?

If completed, A Court of Thorns and Roses would have been Hulu’s first fantasy series. Other major streaming platforms already have their own big-budget fantasy hits:

  • House of the Dragon – Max
  • The Wheel of Time – Prime Video
  • The Witcher – Netflix
  • Percy Jackson and the Olympians – Disney+

Many fans were curious to see how Hulu would handle a high-profile fantasy adaptation, but for now, that opportunity is gone.

Could Another Network Pick It Up?

It’s unclear whether the series could be revived by another platform. Moore seemed to be a key part of the project, and without him, its future is uncertain.

That said, Sarah J. Maas’ books remain incredibly popular, and she has written far more than just A Court of Thorns and Roses. There’s a huge opportunity for someone to bring her stories to the screen—not to mention making millions of fans very happy.

But it won’t be Hulu. And it won’t be now.
